5 Tips For Success When Launching Your Next Tech Job Adventure

Do your New Year’s resolutions include finding a new job? According to YouGov, an online polling firm, 14% of all Americans included finding a new job as one of their 2018 New Year’s Resolutions – making it one of the highest ranked for this year.

As you look for new opportunities, begin the interview process, and launch your new career adventure, think about what you need to do to be successful. It’s not just about crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. However, when it comes to tech-jobs, there are some things you can do to help ensure your success from interviewing to onboarding. Here are 5 key tips to think about:

1.     Gifts Matter. No, I’m not saying you need to bring a gift to the interview, but you do need to know what experience you can deliver to the team beyond the specific job description. It is beneficial to discuss your diverse experience during the interview process to support your candidacy. You may be focused on a development position, but if you also have experience on a client success team, that can work in your favor.

2.     Know Your Answer Before Asking the Question.  If you are going to an interview, know the answers you want to hear to the questions you ask BEFORE the interview begins. Every candidate says they want to find the right fit or the right culture – but what that looks like is different for everyone. Be ready for the interviewer to turn that question around and ask you what an ideal fit looks like. Be prepared so you don’t stumble through your answer.

3.     Always Ask for Clarity.  Make sure you are clear about what is expected of you in the first 3-6 months, so you have a clear path for success. Things are always shifting in small companies and start-ups, so it’s essential you have a steady path to focus on.

4.     Don’t Get Distracted.  Even though you may have gifts that can help you succeed long-term, don’t let yourself get distracted from the position you were hired to fill. In start-ups we wear many hats, and you may be excited to help, for example, on a marketing project. However, if you get over-involved in side projects too early, you won’t take the time you need to become the expert in your core area. Understand what you need to do in the first 3 months, and don’t lose your focus. The time to wear a few extra hats will come.

5.     FOMO Doesn’t Help You.  If you have a fear of missing out on big projects and feel you need to be part of everything, figure out what you need to do to reel yourself in quickly (remember #4). Think about what types of company structures (small, large, start-up) might present too much of a distraction for you to be a good fit, and focus on companies where you can succeed.
